What Is Modifier KM And Modifier KN?

The KM modifier is defined by the CPT manual as: “Replacement of facial prosthesis including new impression/moulage.”

The KN modifier is defined by the CPT manual as: “Replacement of facial prosthesis using previous master model.

When To Use Modifier KM And Modifier KN?

KM Modifier and KN Modifier are to be used on claims for replacement of items identified by codes described below.

  • HCPCS Code L8040: Nasal prosthesis, provided by a non-Physician.
  • HCPCS Code L8041: Midfacial prosthesis, provided by a non-physician.
  • HCPCS Code L8042: Orbital prosthesis, provided by a non-physician.
  • HCPCS Code L8043: Upper facial prosthesis, provided by a non-physician.
  • HCPCS Code L8044: Hemi-facial prosthesis, provided by a non-physician.
  • HCPCS Code L8045: Auricular prosthesis, provided by a non-physician.
  • HCPCS Code L8046: Partial facial prosthesis, provided by a non-physician.
  • HCPCS Code L8047: Nasal septal prosthesis, provided by a non-physician.

Payment for these codes is based on the presence of modifier KM or modifier KN. The modifiers are only used when a prostheses is being replaced.

Use the KM Modifier replacement of facial prosthesis (including new impression/moulage).

Use the KN modifier for the replacement of facial prosthesis with the previous master model.
