CPT Code 23552 | Description & Clinical Information
CPT 23552 describes the use of an open treatment approach by a provider to fix an abnormal separation of a joint, known as an acute or chronic acromioclavicular dislocation, through the use of internal fixation implants like pins or screws and a graft of fascia.
Official Description
The CPT book defines CPT code 23552 as: “Open treatment of acromioclavicular dislocation, acute or chronic; with fascial graft (includes obtaining graft)”.
Clinical Information
The procedure described by CPT code 23552 involves the treatment of an acromioclavicular joint dislocation, which occurs when the joint between the shoulder blade and the collar bone is separated. To correct this abnormality, the patient is first prepped and anesthetized. The provider then makes an incision in the shoulder skin over the dislocated joint and carefully dissects through the subcutaneous tissue, taking care to protect the nerves and vessels.
The provider then retracts the muscles to obtain adequate exposure of the acromioclavicular joint which allows him to adjust the bones and reduce the dislocation. To ensure that the dislocated bone stays in place, the provider obtains a fascial graft through a separate incision on another part of the body. He then uses screws, nails or wires to fix the dislocated bone in the correct position. Finally, he sutures the skin layers back together to close up the incisions.
After the procedure, the acromioclavicular joint is placed in a sling or brace for a period of four weeks, which helps to promote healing. To confirm the reduction of the dislocation, the provider may perform a separately reported Xray examination of the acromioclavicular joint.
Overall, the use of CPT code 23552 is an effective method for treating acromioclavicular joint dislocations. The procedure is performed with precision and care to ensure that the bones are correctly aligned and the tissues are protected. With the right post-operative care and follow-up, patients can recover fully and return to their normal activities.
