CPT Code 30930 | Description & Clinical Information
CPT 30930 describes the medical procedure in which the healthcare provider fractures one or more of the inferior turbinates to alleviate the overgrowth of the inferior turbinates and to release the nasal airway obstruction.
Official Description
The CPT book defines CPT code 30930 as: “Fracture nasal inferior turbinate(s), therapeutic”.
Billing Guidelines
Do not use codes 30801, 30802, or 30930 together with 30130 or 30140. Remember to include “CPT” before each code.
Use CPT code 30999 for fractures of the superior or middle turbinate(s).
Clinical Information
The procedure described by CPT code 30930 involves a surgical technique to treat hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates, which can create obstructions within the nasal airway. This treatment is an effective option for patients who experience chronic sinusitis, nasal congestion, allergies, or other respiratory issues due to impaired nasal breathing.
To begin the procedure, the patient must be appropriately prepped and anesthetized. Once ready, the provider makes an incision in the mucosa of the inferior turbinates if necessary. Following this, the provider will then separate the mucous membrane from the underlying inferior turbinates, revealing the bony fragments beneath. At this point, the provider will often use forceps to remove the bony fragments and outfracture the inferior turbinates. This fracture repositions the turbinate, opening up the nasal airway to more efficient breathing.
Throughout the procedure, the provider may use methods such as electrocautery or laser to control any bleeding that arises. Ultimately, the goal of the procedure is to treat hypertrophy of the inferior turbinates and release any obstruction in the nasal airway, thus improving the patient’s breathing.
While the procedure is generally safe and minimally invasive, as with any surgical procedure, there is a risk of complications or side effects. These can include bleeding, infection, pain, or other discomfort post-surgery. To mitigate these risks, it is essential that patients follow their provider’s post-operative instructions, which may include avoiding certain activities or medications that could interfere with the healing process.
In addition, to ensure that the patient gets the most benefit from the procedure, the provider will often provide post-operative care and follow-up appointments to monitor the patient’s progress and adjust treatment as necessary.
Overall, the 30930 procedure is an important treatment option for patients who experience chronic sinusitis, nasal congestion, allergies, or other respiratory issues due to impaired nasal breathing. By opening up the nasal airway and repositioning the inferior turbinates, patients can experience improved breathing, better sleep, and an overall better quality of life. If you or a loved one is struggling with impaired nasal breathing, reach out to your healthcare provider to explore whether the 30930 procedure may be the right option for you.
