CPT Code 43283 | Description & Clinical Information
CPT 43283 describes the procedure in which the healthcare provider performs laparoscopic esophageal lengthening to extend a short esophagus during the same session as a separately reportable laparoscopic fundoplasty or paraesophageal hernia repair.
Official Description
The CPT book defines CPT code 43283 as: “Laparoscopy, surgical, esophageal lengthening procedure (eg, Collis gastroplasty or wedge gastroplasty) (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure)”.

Clinical Information
The procedure described by CPT code 43283 is a surgical process that involves esophageal lengthening through a method known as Collis gastroplasty. Typically, the surgeon will perform this procedure at the same time as a laparoscopic fundoplasty. This primary procedure may also include repairing a paraesophageal hernia when necessary.
Before the procedure, the patient will be properly prepped and anesthetized. Then, the surgeon will use a laparoscopic stapler to taper the upper part of the stomach, creating a small tube that can act as an extension to the esophagus. This extension is necessary to lengthen the esophagus, which patients may require due to damage caused by gastroesophageal reflux.
Once the esophageal lengthening is complete, the surgeon will move on to the separately reportable fundoplication procedure. This involves wrapping the top part of the stomach around the esophagus, which creates a barrier to reflux. Once all procedures are complete, the surgeon will close the incisions.
It is important to note that this same procedure can be used to lengthen the esophagus during hiatal hernia repair as well. In this situation, the surgeon will repair the hernia in conjunction with the esophageal lengthening and fundoplication procedures.
While this procedure may seem complex, it is essential for patients who have suffered damage from gastroesophageal reflux or who require surgery to repair a paraesophageal hernia. By using laparoscopic techniques and advanced tools like the laparoscopic stapler, surgeons are able to perform this complicated procedure with precision and care. With the right treatment plan and surgical approach, patients can recover from this procedure and enjoy a healthier quality of life.
