CPT 70553 | Brain And Brain Stem MRI With & Without Contrast Material

CPT code 70553 describes a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) procedure of the brain and brain stem and includes an initial scan without contrast and additional sequences with contrast material.

What Is CPT Code 70553

CPT 70553 describes a procedure known as magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) of the brain and brain stem.

This procedure includes an initial scan without the use of contrast material and a series of additional images taken after the injection of contrast material into the bloodstream.

The procedure begins with an initial scan of the brain and brain stem without using contrast material.

This is followed by the injection of contrast material (such as gadolinium) into the bloodstream to obtain additional images.

These additional images are taken to help highlight specific areas of the brain and help to diagnose certain conditions.

Description

The CPT book describes CPT code 70553 as: “Magnetic resonance (e.g., proton) imaging, brain (including brain stem); without contrast material, followed by contrast material(s) and further sequences.”

Procedure

A provider performs a brain and brain stem MRI without contrast material, followed by enhanced images with contrast material.

The patient is positioned, sedated, and instructed to remain still during the procedure.

A surface coil antenna is placed around the head, and the patient is slid into a large magnetic scanner.

The initial exam takes 30-45 minutes, and the computer produces 3D images of the scanned area for analysis.

The provider may repeat the procedure if necessary. After the procedure, the provider reviews the images before releasing the patient.

How To Use CPT 70553

Only use CPT 70553 for MRI procedures of the brain and stem if the provider performed the procedure without contrast followed by contrast. If the provider does an MRI of the brain and brain stem without contrast, use CPT code 70551 instead.

Use CPT code 70552 when the provider performs an MRI of the brain and brain stem with contrast material.

You can use CPT 76390 for magnetic spectroscopy.
