CPT 92507 describes the treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorders provided by a qualified healthcare professional that is medically necessary.

What Is CPT Code 92507?

CPT code 92507 describes a treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorder.

CPT 92507 reports a service provided by a speech-language pathologist (SLP) or another qualified healthcare professional trained in assessing and treating speech, language, and communication disorders.

The treatment may include articulation therapy, language therapy, oral motor exercises, and auditory processing training.

CPT code 92507 must be medically necessary. That is, the services must be deemed reasonable and necessary for diagnosing or treating an illness or injury.

Description

The CPT book describes CPT code 92507 as: “Treatment of speech, language, voice, communication, and/or auditory processing disorder; individual.”

Procedure

The provider helps patients with communication and hearing difficulties by engaging with them directly.

They evaluate the patient’s ability to make sounds and their receptive and expressive deficits to determine if sound signals are reaching the brain through the ears.

To improve the patient’s communication abilities, the provider conducts articulation therapy to teach them how to distinguish between sounds, react to different sounds, and incorporate various sounds into words and phrases.

Additionally, the provider performs exercises to improve oral strength and control and provides language therapy for both receptive and expressive communication.

To facilitate communication, the provider also uses actions and lip movements. Throughout the treatment, the provider observes the patient’s progress and guides them to help them perform daily activities more effectively.

How To Use CPT 92507

Procedures such as otoscopy, anterior rhinoscopy, removal of nonimpacted cerumen, or tuning fork tests should not be reported separately if they are included as an evaluation and management service. However, CPT 92507 is a specialized diagnostic test and should be reported separately.

CPT 92507 should not be reported with CPT codes 97153 or 97155.

When offering services in a group setting, it is appropriate to use CPT code 92508 instead.

CPT code 92507 can be used for diagnosing and treating speech-language disorders that lead to communication disabilities and is not based on the time spent with the patient. Therefore, it is not appropriate to bill multiple units on the same day.

Medicare guidelines vary by region, but many require that a speech-language pathologist provides ongoing speech therapy services.
