CPT code 30140 refers to submucous resection of the inferior turbinate. This procedure involves the reduction of the turbinate bone while preserving the mucosa.
What Is CPT Code 30140?
CPT 30140 describes the submucous resection procedure of the inferior turbinate, also known as inferior turbinoplasty.
This procedure involves the administration of general anesthesia, followed by an incision into the anterior pole of the inferior turbinate.
The physician then performs a submucosal dissection to elevate the inferior turbinates from the turbinate bone, allowing for the reduction of the bone while preserving the mucosa.
In some cases, the surgeon may also remove some of the lateral turbinate mucosa to cover the bare bone of the remaining turbinate.”
The CPT book describes CPT code 30140 as: “Submucous resection inferior turbinate, partial or complete, any method.”
Submucosal resection of the inferior turbinate is also called an inferior turbinoplasty.
After administering general anesthesia, the physician makes an incision into the anterior pole of the inferior turbinate before performing submucosal dissection.
Then, the inferior turbinates are elevated from the turbinate bone, allowing the surgeon to fracture the bone and reduce it while preserving the mucosa.
Finally, the surgeon may also resect some of the lateral turbinate mucosa, to replace any remaining mucosa over the bare bone of the remaining turbinate.
How To Use CPT 30140
Do not report CPT code 30140 in combination with CPT 30801, CPT 30802, or CPT 30930.
You may use CPT code 30999 for the superior or middle turbinate submucous resection.
Use CPT code 31240 for endoscopic resection of the concha bullosa of the middle turbinate.
For submucous resection of the nasal septum, you may use CPT code 30520.
