CPT Code 70544 | Description, Procedure & Billing Guidelines (2022)

You can bill CPT 70544 for a magnetic resonance angiography procedure (MRI) of the patient’s head without contrast material.

1. What Is CPT Code 70544?

CPT code 70544 covers a magnetic resonance angiography procedure of the vessels in the patient’s head and surrounding areas without using contrast material.

2. Description

The CPT book defined the official description of the 70544 CPT code as follows: “Magnetic resonance angiography, head; without contrast material(s).”

3. Procedure

The provider begins the 70544 CPT code procedure by asking the patient to lie down on the examination table and requesting the patient to lie still.

Then, an examination is performed without contrast material, and the provider places devices on the patient’s head that transmits radio waves. Next, an electric current produces a magnetic field, sending the data to the computer.

Finally, the computer turns the data into 3D images of high resolution to be interpreted by the provider.

TIP: You can find all the CPT codes for MRI here.

4. How To Use CPT Code 70544

Use CPT code 70544 only if the procedure was performed without contrast material. You can use CPT code 70545 for the same procedure with contrast material or CPT 70546 for a procedure without contrast material followed by contrast material.

Add modifier 26 to the claim if a physician only interpreted the images from the 70544 procedure. Likewise, modifier TC can be added to CPT code 70544 if the procedure was performed without the physician’s interpretation.
