CPT Code 96110 | Developmental Screening
CPT 96110 describes using a standardized form to assess the presence of developmental disorders in children. The form evaluates the child’s progress in meeting developmental milestones and the maturity of speech and language.
Description
The CPT book defines CPT 96110 as: “Developmental screening (e.g., developmental milestone survey, speech, and language delay screen), with scoring and documentation, per standardized instrument.”
Procedure
The provider implements a standardized form to assess the presence of any developmental disorders in a child, commonly done during the critical developmental stages of infancy or adolescence.
This form enables the provider to evaluate the child’s progress in meeting the developmental milestones and the age-appropriate maturity of speech and language.
The standardized form uses specific parameters to measure the child’s progress, making it a valuable tool for detecting delays or issues.
The provider can also use the results of the standardized form to determine if the patient needs further evaluation or treatment for the developmental disorder.
A variety of standardized screening instruments can be utilized, such as the Ages and Stages Questionnaire: Social Emotional (ASQ SE), Australian Scale for Asperger’s Syndrome (ASAS), Behavior Assessment Scale for Children (BASC), Behavioral Rating Inventory of Executive Functioning (BRIEF), Child Development Review, Communication and Symbolic Scales Developmental Profile (CSBS DP), Kaufman Brief Intelligence Test, Parents’ Evaluation of Developmental Status (PEDS), Pediatric Symptom Checklist (PSC), and Vanderbilt Rating Scales.
The provider then evaluates and documents the objective data gathered from the standardized form, which helps identify any delays or issues with the child’s development and speech and language.
The provider may use an appropriate standardized instrument to score the results and ensure that the data collected is accurate, objective, and reliable.
This information is critical in determining the necessary steps for the child’s growth and development, making the standardized form a vital tool in assessing children’s developmental disorders.
