CPT Code 96375 | Intravenous Push Of Additional Substance/Drug

CPT 96375 describes administering an additional substance or drug via intravenous push as a secondary or subsequent service.

What Is CPT Code 96375?

CPT code 96375 is an add-on code that describes administering an additional substance or drug via intravenous push.

According to the CPT book, this code is used for “each additional sequential intravenous push of a new substance/drug”. Therefore, CPT 96375 should be listed separately in addition to the code for the primary procedure.

Before the procedure, the provider should explain the need for the rapid intravenous infusion to the patient and/or their family member, including the reason for the infusion and what to expect during the procedure.

The provider should also check the medication label to ensure that the correct drug and dosage are administered.

During the procedure, the provider adds a medication to an already established IV and sets the infusion rate. They then rapidly administer the drug or substance into a vein by IV push. If multiple medications are being administered, the provider should use the same technique to infuse them sequentially.

Description

The CPT book describes the add-on CPT code 96375 as: “Therapeutic, prophylactic, or diagnostic injection (specify substance or drug); each additional sequential intravenous push of a new substance/drug (List separately in addition to code for primary procedure).”

Procedure

The provider explains the need for rapid intravenous infusion to the patient and/or their family member, including the reason for the infusion and what to expect during the procedure.

The provider compares the medication name and dosage on the bag’s label to the patient’s orders.

The provider adds the prepackaged medication of a different drug from the initial infusion to an already established IV and sets the infusion rate. He then rapidly administers the drug or substance into a vein by IV push.

The provider uses the same technique to infuse one or more additional drugs sequentially.
