CPT Code 99454 | Description, Procedure & Billing Guidelines (2022)

Report CPT code 99454 for the supply of remote physiologic monitoring equipment and 30 days of monitoring.

1. What Is CPT Code 99454?

CPT 99454 covers the procedure in which a provider supplies remote physiologic monitoring equipment to patients for daily recordings and/or programmed alerts.

This code can be billed for every 30 days they use the equipment.

2. Description

The CPT book describes CPT code 99454 as: “Remote monitoring of physiologic parameter(s) (e.g., weight, blood pressure, pulse oximetry, respiratory flow rate), initial; device(s) supply with daily recording(s) or programmed alert(s) transmission, every 30 days.”

3. Procedure

The 99454 CPT code procedure begins with the provider supplying a patient with remote monitoring equipment for tracking and reporting;

  • expiratory flow rate;
  • blood oxygen levels;
  • blood pressure;
  • weight; and/or
  • other parameters.

The device also remotely monitors recordings and programmed alerts via electronic methods.

4. How To Use CPT Code 99454

The minimum time for monitoring is 16 days. Therefore, do not use CPT code 99454 if the total time was less than 16 days.

Use CPT 99473 or CPT 99474 instead of CPT 99454 for self-measured blood pressure monitoring.

You can not report CPT 99473 with more specific physiologic parameter CPT codes (for example, CPT 94760 or CPT 93296).

You can use CPT code 99457 for physiologic monitoring treatment management services.

CPT code 99453 can be used for initial setup and training on remote monitoring equipment of physiologic parameters.
