(2023) | List With The CPT Codes For Fine Needle Aspiration Biopsy Procedures

Fine needle aspiration biopsy, also referred to as FNA, is a procedure in which a surgeon uses e fine needle and syringe for the removal of sample of tissue, cells or fluid from a lump of the patient’s body. The CPT manual describes different versions of fine needle aspiration procedures with the CPT codes 10004 until CPT 10021. We also included CPT 45342 and CPT 48100 because FNA is also included in those procedures.

CPT Code 10004

Description: CPT 10004 can be used when a fine needle aspiration biopsy without imaging guidance is performed on an additional lesion. It is listed separately in addition to the code for the primary procedure.

CPT Code 10005

Description: CPT 10005 can be reported for a fine needle aspiration biopsy, including ultrasound guidance on the first lesion.

CPT Code 10006

Description: The CPT 10006 can be utilised for fine needle aspiration biopsy, including ultrasound guidance on each additional lesion. This must be listed separately along with a code for the primary procedure.

CPT Code 10007

Description: CPT 10007 pertains specifically to a fine needle aspiration biopsy, where the first lesion is monitored with the help of fluoroscopic guidance.

CPT Code 10008

Description: The CPT 10008 can be used in cases where a fine needle aspiration biopsy is performed and it includes fluoroscopic guidance for each additional lesion. As with previous codes, it should be listed separately, along with the code for the primary procedure.

CPT Code 10009

Description: CPT 10009 is used to code a fine needle aspiration biopsy, which includes CT guidance for the first lesion.

CPT Code 10010

Description: CPT 10010 can be reported when fine needle aspiration biopsy is performed, which includes CT guidance for each additional lesion. Always remember to list this separately, in addition to the code for the primary procedure.

CPT Code 10011

Description: CPT Code 10011 is used for coding a fine needle aspiration biopsy, which includes MR guidance for analysing the first lesion.

CPT Code 10012

Description of CPT 10012 entails the usage of this code for diagnosing through fine needle aspiration biopsy including MR guidance for each additional lesion.

CPT Code 10021

Description: CPT 10021 can be reported when a fine needle aspiration biopsy is performed without imaging guidance for the first lesion.

CPT Code 45342

Description: CPT 45342 can be used during a flexible sigmoidoscopy, with transendoscopic ultrasound guided intramural or transmural fine needle aspiration/biopsy.

CPT Code 48100

Description: CPT 48100 pertains to an open biopsy of pancreas, using methods such as fine needle aspiration, needle core biopsy or wedge biopsy.
