Medical Billing Specialist

The Medical Billing Specialist will support revenue cycle operations by handling inbound patient calls, resolving billing questions, and following up on outstanding balances. This role involves working with patient statements, insurance information, EOBs/RA, adjustments, refunds, correspondence, and account reconciliation while maintaining quality, production, and HIPAA standards.

Key responsibilities

  • Communicate with up to 50 patients per day by phone and email in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Answer questions about patient statements, billing, and related account issues.
  • Reconcile patient accounts and help ensure statement accuracy.
  • Interpret Explanations of Benefits (EOB) or Remittance Advice (RA).
  • Explain billing statements and related methodology.
  • Maintain accurate records of collection activity according to company procedures.
  • Process requests quickly, accurately, and consistently under general supervision.
  • Submit adjustment and refund requests when needed.
  • Keep management informed of concerns and issues.
  • Assist with monthly closing activities by ensuring all required information is entered into the system.
  • Process credit card payments.
  • Monitor hardship applications.
  • Process correspondence as assigned.
  • Follow all HIPAA guidelines.
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of revenue cycle customer billing.
  • Detail-oriented with a strong focus on customer service.
  • Strong time management skills and ability to manage individual assignments.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to handle and maintain confidential information.

Preferred qualifications

  • Secondary education or medical certification.
  • Experience in the healthcare industry.
  • Knowledge of CRM tools and related analytics.

Competencies

  • Experience with Microsoft Office, including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Familiarity with performance metrics and meeting targets.
  • Strong customer service skills and professional demeanor.
  • Working knowledge of HIPAA and the Affordable Care Act.
  • Problem-solving ability and willingness to support staff coaching and training.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Ability to manage multiple concurrent tasks and frequent interruptions.
  • Strong analytical skills.
