Medical Biller I

Covenant Medical Group is Covenant Health’s employed and managed medical practice organization serving multiple specialties across East Tennessee.

This role supports billing and follow-up activities for primary, secondary, and tertiary claims. The position reviews rejected, denied, unpaid, or improperly paid insurance claims; corrects and resubmits claims; communicates with patients and payers; and helps ensure timely and accurate claim processing.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Submit claims through clearinghouses, payer portals, and paper mail
  • Review claim rejections, make corrections, and process rebills
  • Identify and obtain supporting financial and medical records
  • Analyze denials and rejections to determine root cause and resolution
  • Interpret payer correspondence, CARC and RARC codes, and payer-specific denial language
  • Verify eligibility, coordination of benefits, and plan participation
  • Update registration information and contact payers or patients when needed
  • Provide patient support regarding claims, benefits, and account balances
  • Process adjustments, payment transfers, and refunds in the practice management system
  • Apply self-pay discounts and good faith estimate adjustments
  • Assist with quality improvement efforts and meet productivity/quality expectations
Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum requirements include:

  • High school diploma or equivalent, or an acceptable combination of education and experience
  • 1 to 2 years of healthcare revenue cycle experience, such as medical billing, insurance verification, registration, HIM, coding, claims management, follow-up, or appeals
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, insurance payer rules, and state/federal regulations
  • Strong problem-solving, critical thinking, and independent work skills
  • Proficiency with PC, Windows, Excel, and Word
  • Ability to perform adequately and independently within 3 to 6 months
  • Professional certification may substitute for up to 1 year of experience
