Handles new claims, posting payments, and lower-complexity appeals for emergency ambulance transport medical claims. Provides customer service, processes medical and billing record requests, and supports EMS-related billing operations.
Responsibilities include:
- Review, generate, and process emergency ambulance transport medical claims
- Determine appropriate CPT, ICD-10, and HCPCS codes using ePCR data and related documentation
- Retrieve hospital face sheets and research insurance information as needed
- Determine primary, secondary, and tertiary insurance sequencing
- Submit CMS-1500 forms when necessary
- Transmit electronic claims and review acceptance and rejection reports
- Verify claim batches cleared the billing system and clearinghouse checks
- Review and process medical and billing record requests, subpoenas, affidavits, and related documentation
- Prepare invoices and submit record request materials to the appropriate parties
- Provide in-person and telephone customer service to patients
- Take payments in person and over the phone
- Review incoming correspondence and distribute it accordingly
- Assist with daily work assignments and other clerical duties as assigned
- Drive a City vehicle when required for business purposes
Requirements & Qualifications
Required qualifications include:
- High school diploma or GED
- At least 6 months of experience in medical coding, Medicare or Medicaid, insurance claims, or clerical work in a medical office
- Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, Medicare, Medicaid, insurance claim submission, collections, and HIPAA guidelines
- Ability to communicate clearly in English, and orally in Spanish
- Strong planning, organizational, and customer service skills
- Ability to maintain a valid Texas driver license and a good driving record
- Billing and coding certification must be obtained within 12 months of employment
- TB test/screening required before employment
- Background check, certified school transcripts, and drug/alcohol testing may be required
