Medical Biller / Certified Coder

Job Summary

Responsible for all aspects of the medical billing process, from generating completed medical claims submissions to a completed and paid A/R. The role receives encounters from the EMR or other sources, prepares encounters for submission, abstracts clinical information from medical records, assigns appropriate DX and/or CPT-4 codes, corrects errors and denials, and maintains accounts receivable processes to support organizational goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Review and analyze records to identify and correct errors.
  • Prepare encounters and coded medical billing claims generated from the EMR for submission to insurance carriers or other parties.
  • Submit claims accurately the first time.
  • Determine correct encounter codes from patient records and maintain detailed coded information.
  • Abstract data from medical records to support diagnosis coding and charge capture.
  • Interact with physicians and assistants to ensure documentation and coding accuracy.
  • Track patient data across multiple visits.
  • Communicate with providers, audit records, and provide training as needed.
  • Identify documentation and coding inconsistencies.
  • Report issues that impact reimbursement and revenue cycle performance.
  • Maintain A/R goals and daily A/R functions.
  • Correct errors and denials from designated work queues.
  • Participate in department meetings, training sessions, and webinars as requested.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the role.

Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED
  • Certified Professional Coder credential, or equivalent such as Certified Coding Specialist (CCS), Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT), or Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
  • 2 years of experience in medical billing within an EMR and PM environment, from billing through A/R
  • Preferred: 3-6 years of experience with full medical billing functions
