ruralMED Management Resources, an Ovation Healthcare partner, is seeking a Hospital Outpatient Specialty Coder to perform critical access hospital coding for emergency department, infusion, Critical Access Hospital Specialty Clinic, professional fees, and Rural Health Clinic services. This role is responsible for timely and accurate coding of medical claims while helping maximize reimbursement.
Key responsibilities
- Receive and review charge entry data from practice sites
- Identify and investigate incomplete or missing charges
- Abstract clinical information and translate medical documentation into diagnoses and procedural codes using current coding and classification systems
- Sequence codes according to established guidelines
- Analyze medical information and diagnoses to support accurate prospective payment system reimbursement
- Maintain current knowledge of coding rules and regulations from AMA, CMS, and other payers
- Maintain proficiency with EHR and other systems used to perform job duties
- Communicate payer, system, or escalated account issues to management
- Identify medical necessity denial trends and suggest resolutions
- May perform billing functions including claim submission, unpaid claims follow-up, and denial resolution
- Participate in department meetings, in-service programs, and continuing education
- Maintain confidentiality of patient information and comply with policies and procedures
- Perform other duties as assigned

Required qualifications
- High School Diploma or GED
- Certified Professional Coder (CPC) or Certified Coding Specialist (CCS)
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Proficient with Microsoft Office
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to use multiple client systems and manage competing priorities
- Enthusiasm for a remote teamwork environment
Preferred qualifications
- Associate degree
- Three to five years of experience in emergency room coding, infusion coding, or specialty clinic procedure coding
- Critical Access Hospital and/or Rural Health Clinic coding experience
- Two years of experience with formal coding training may be considered
