CES is seeking a Medical Coding Auditor to perform independent external coding audits for NAVAHCS in compliance with VHA Coding Guidelines, VHA Directives, and official national coding standards.
The role focuses on monthly auditing of admissions, producing evidence-based reports, and creating targeted education plans that support documentation improvement and coding compliance across the facility.
Core responsibilities include:
- Audit 80 outpatient encounters and 10 inpatient admissions per month using VA EHR and a national encoder
- Validate ICD-10-CM/PCS, CPT, HCPCS, E/M levels, modifiers, DRG assignment, and POA indicators
- Apply VHA Coding Guidelines, VHA Directives, NCCI edits, and other official national guidance
- Identify unbundling, sequencing errors, and documentation deficiencies, with remediation recommendations
- Maintain inter-reviewer reliability through internal QA and standardized audit methodology
Requirements & Qualifications
- 3 to 5 years of medical coding experience required
- 2+ years of experience in coding audit or compliance preferred
- Remote work opportunity
- Active RHIA, RHIT, CCS, CCS-P, CPC, or equivalent certification required
- Training on VHA Coding Guidelines and applicable VHA Directives/Handbooks
- Prior VA/VHA coding or audit experience strongly preferred
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite, including Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Teams, and Outlook
