The Inpatient Medical Coder is responsible for accurately coding hospital inpatient accounts to support appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance with federal and state regulations. This role works under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality and uses established ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems.
The position requires strong knowledge of inpatient coding, DRG assignment, and documentation review. The coder collaborates with clinical staff, sends coding queries when needed, monitors daily work queues, and helps ensure timely and accurate billing and abstracting of records.
Education
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training required
- Associate's or bachelor's degree preferred
Experience
- At least 2 years of inpatient ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital setting
- Experience with MS-DRG and APR-DRG methodologies preferred
- Experience with inpatient reimbursement guidelines preferred
Certifications
- Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
- RHIT or RHIA preferred
