The Inpatient Medical Coder codes hospital inpatient accounts to support appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance with federal and state regulations. This role works under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality and uses ICD-10-CM/PCS coding systems, EHR tools, and coding references to ensure accurate inpatient coding, abstracting, and reporting. The position also supports billing workflows, communicates with clinical and hospital departments, and helps resolve documentation and coding issues.
Requirements & Qualifications
Required Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training required
- At least 2 years of inpatient ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital setting
- Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
- Preferred: Associate's or Bachelor's degree
- Preferred: RHIT or RHIA certification
- Experience with MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies and inpatient reimbursement guidelines preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to prioritize workloads, meet deadlines, and work effectively under pressure
- Excellent customer service and communication skills
- Familiarity with medical terminology, office procedures, computer systems, and typing

- Maintain compliance with AHIMA ethical coding standards and HIPAA privacy regulations
- Participate in ongoing education, training, and certification maintenance
- Ability to work with minimal supervision
