The Inpatient Medical Coder accurately codes hospital inpatient accounts to support appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance with federal and state regulations. The role works under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality and follows established ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems.

Key responsibilities include coding inpatient cases, assigning ICD-10 diagnosis and procedure codes, reviewing medical records for relevant documentation, communicating coding queries to providers and clinical staff, monitoring work queues and daily productivity, and maintaining high accuracy to reduce denials and billing errors. The position also supports documentation improvement efforts, participates in DRG mismatch meetings, and uses EHR and coding software to complete assignments efficiently.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training required
  • Associate's or bachelor's degree preferred
  • At least 2 years of inpatient ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital setting required
  • Experience with MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies and inpatient reimbursement guidelines preferred

Certifications

  • CCS certification required
  • RHIT or RHIA preferred

Skills and Abilities

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Strong customer service and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision
  • Familiarity with medical terminology, computer systems, and typing

Other Requirements

  • Must comply with AHIMA ethical coding standards and HIPAA privacy regulations
  • Ability to perform light work
