Medical Coder

The inpatient medical coder is responsible for accurately coding hospital inpatient accounts to support appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance with federal and state regulations. This role works under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality and uses ICD-10-CM/PCS coding classification systems to assign codes for inpatient records.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Analyzing inpatient cases and assigning diagnostic and procedural codes
  • Ensuring accurate MS-DRG, MCC/CC, APR-DRG, SOI/ROM, and POA assignments
  • Reviewing medical records to extract information for code assignment
  • Sending coding queries to providers and coordinating with clinical documentation specialists as needed
  • Monitoring assigned work queues and completing coding/abstracting within established timeframes
  • Communicating with hospital departments regarding billing and registration issues
  • Maintaining compliance with AHIMA ethical coding standards and HIPAA privacy regulations
  • Using coding references, software tools, and EHR systems to support accurate code assignment
  • Participating in ongoing education, training, and certification activities
Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • High school graduate or equivalent required
  • Formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training required
  • Associate or bachelor's degree preferred
  • At least 2 years of inpatient ICD-10-CM/ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital setting required
  • Experience with MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies and inpatient reimbursement guidelines preferred

Licensure and certification

  • Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) required
  • RHIT or RHIA preferred

Skills and abilities

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and with minimal supervision
  • Excellent customer service and communication skills
  • Basic knowledge of medical terminology
  • Computer and typing proficiency
