The ED/Clinic Coding Specialist reviews patient medical records to perform comprehensive coding and abstracting for emergency department and outpatient clinic encounters. The role ensures accurate ICD-10, CPT-4, and APC coding, supports claim generation, and helps maintain billing accuracy and timely chart completion. The position works under the supervision of the HIM Coding leadership and requires the ability to work independently.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Graduate of an approved Health Information Management Technology program preferred.
- RHIT, CCS, CPC, or another relevant credential preferred; credential required within 1 year of hire/transfer.
- Medical Secretarial program graduates with acute care coding experience may also be considered.
- No previous work experience required.
- Preferred knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, DRG, and APC coding rules and methodologies.
- Strong understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Basic typing skills and computer proficiency.
- Strong communication skills for clarifying documentation with physicians and staff.
