The Inpatient Coding Specialist is responsible for assigning diagnosis and procedure codes for billing and statistical reporting, tracking incomplete Medicare records awaiting DRG prompter responses, and maintaining the unbilled accounts report. The role also works with Corporate Compliance to ensure coding is based on complete and accurate documentation that reflects the patient's medical condition and severity of illness.

Requirements & Qualifications
Education and experience
- High school diploma or equivalent required
- Completion of an AHIMA-approved RHIT or RHIA course preferred
- Completion of college-level anatomy and physiology and related science courses preferred
- Minimum 2 years of coding experience in an acute care setting preferred
Certification
- CCS or CIC required
- CPC accepted with prior inpatient coding experience
- If RHIA/RHIT certified, CCS or CIC must be obtained within 1 year of hire
Skills and abilities
- Skilled in the use of computers
- Ability to manage time and schedules effectively
- Ability to monitor and maintain quality control standards
- Ability to work independently and in a team environment
- Knowledge of organizational structure, workflow, and operating procedures
