Responsible for assigning accurate ICD codes for diagnoses and procedures for inpatient stays, including MS-DRG assignment through grouper software. The role may also include coding for inpatient professional services, such as rounds or IBWA encounters, and supporting coding compliance activities.
This position works with hospital and military health record systems, including MHS GENESIS, 3M Encompass 360, and Joint Legacy Viewer (JLV). The coder reviews medical record documentation, resolves coding edits, supports audits, and may assist with ambulatory and outpatient coding as needed.
The role also includes educating MTF staff on coding issues, maintaining delinquency reports for missing documentation, and ensuring coding accuracy, completeness, productivity, and timeliness standards are met.
Qualifications
- Excellent computer and communication skills for provider and staff interactions
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, disease processes, medical terminology, inpatient coding guidelines, documentation requirements, medications, reimbursement guidelines, and encoder systems
- Ability to manage multiple projects and prioritize tasks to meet deadlines
- Advanced knowledge of ICD-CM, ICD-PCS, HCPCS, and CPT coding systems
- Advanced knowledge of reimbursement methodologies, including PPS, DRGs, APCs, and RBRVS
- Practical knowledge of medical specialties, ancillary services, revenue cycle concepts, clinical documentation improvement, and EHR workflows
- Familiarity with government coding rules, CMS guidance, NCCI edits, and healthcare fraud and abuse regulations
Education and Certification
- Acceptable certifications include RHIT, RHIA, COC, CIC, and CCS
- Other coding certifications may be considered on a case-by-case basis
- Continuing education is required to maintain applicable national certifications
Experience
- Minimum of 5 years of medical coding and/or auditing experience in two or more medical, surgical, and ancillary specialties within the past 10 years, or
- Minimum of 3 years of medical coding or auditing experience in an MTF
- At least 1 year of performance in the specialty must be documented to qualify
