Reviews, analyzes, and codes medical record documentation for general surgical specialties using the correct ICD-10, CPT, and/or HCPCS codes with the greatest specificity. Abstracts demographic and coding information accurately and completely into the information system. Reviews documentation for medical necessity, audits orders and claims before submission to reduce denials, assesses records, and prepares reports. Provides technical guidance to physicians and other departmental staff to identify and resolve issues or errors. Builds effective working relationships with physicians and other stakeholders. Primary responsibility is diagnostic, complex procedural, and surgery coding.
Education
- H.S. Diploma or GED required
- AAPC-accredited coding certificate program preferred
Experience
- Coding experience required
- Experience coding across multiple specialties preferred
- Remote coding experience preferred
Licenses and Certifications
- One or more of the following required upon hire:
- RHIA
- RHIT
- CCA
- CPC, CPC-A, or CPC-H
- CCS or CCS-P
