Medical Coding Auditor

Our company is searching for a Remote DRG Coding Auditor to join our client's team, performing in-depth documentation and coding audits for healthcare clients.

In this audit-focused role, you will conduct independent reviews of inpatient medical records, evaluating the accuracy of diagnosis and procedure codes to support optimal reimbursement and compliance with official guidelines, regulatory requirements, and ethical standards.

You will leverage deep knowledge of DRG payment systems such as MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and Tricare, assess coding accuracy and documentation integrity, and identify opportunities for coder education and documentation improvement.

This is a fully remote position, and candidates may live anywhere within the U.S.

Hours: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM EST, with some flexibility of about 2 to 3 hours within the daily schedule.

Responsibilities include:

  • Performing comprehensive audits of acute inpatient medical records to identify coding errors, compliance concerns, and educational opportunities.
  • Interpreting and applying ICD-10-CM/PCS coding principles and guidelines.
  • Verifying that assigned DRGs accurately reflect patient severity and resource utilization.
  • Researching regulatory requirements and providing clear, well-supported recommendations in audit reports.
  • Collaborating with Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) specialists to identify documentation and physician query opportunities.
  • Writing concise, constructive feedback and educational notes for coders.
  • Maintaining productivity and quality standards as measured by audit leadership.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of recent coding experience.
  • At least 3 years of acute inpatient/facility coding audit experience.
  • Active CIC (Certified Inpatient Coder) certification.
  • Deep knowledge of DRG payment and reimbursement systems, including MS-DRG, APR-DRG, and Tricare.
  • Ability to independently interpret complex medical records, identify documentation gaps, and communicate required improvements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
