Medical Records Specialist

The Medical Records Specialist is responsible for organizing, maintaining, and safeguarding patient health records. This role responds to internal and external requests for medical record documents while following privacy laws and applicable regulations.

Essential duties

  • Process incoming medical record requests from patients, insurance companies, third-party vendors, and legal entities while maintaining patient confidentiality in accordance with HIPAA and company policies.
  • Safeguard patient data and ensure all handling of protected health information complies with ethical and legal requirements.
  • Ensure accurate record transmission by following company procedures.
  • Verify the authenticity and authorization of record requests.
  • Attend court sessions with client records when mandated by subpoena.
  • Attend mandatory department and agency meetings and trainings.
Requirements & Qualifications

Education and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in an administrative or human services field.
  • EPIC experience required.
  • Experience in medical records and healthcare systems preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of medical terminology, healthcare procedures, and legal requirements related to medical records.

Knowledge and skills

  • Understanding of HIPAA and relevant state and federal laws regarding patient confidentiality.
  • Initiative.
