Under the general supervision of the Manager of Coding, the IP Coder III reviews inpatient records for accurate, timely, and compliant assignment of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes to ensure correct MS-DRG, APR DRG, and SOI assignments.
This position works closely with Coding leadership, IP Coding Validators, and Clinical Documentation Staff to maintain coding uniformity, consistency, and accuracy in accordance with coding guidelines, federal and state regulations, and AHA/Coding Clinic guidance.
The role is responsible for meeting or exceeding quality and productivity expectations while supporting timely coding and billing. This is a full-time, remote, inpatient facility coding position.
Essential Duties
- Review complete electronic and scanned medical records of discharged patients.
- Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis and ICD-10-PCS procedure codes from medical record documentation.
- Abstract coded data and patient information into the coding abstracting system.
- Apply Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting, AHA Coding Clinic advice, and facility-specific guidelines.
- Sequence assigned codes using 3M software for appropriate DRG assignment.
- Participate in training programs and coding guideline updates.
- Identify and help resolve documentation, abstracting, and account-related issues.
Education
- Associate degree in Health Information Management, or completion of an AHIMA or AAPC Coding Certification program.
Certifications
- RHIA, RHIT, or CCS from AHIMA, or CIC from AAPC.
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS inpatient coding experience.
- Preferred: 1 year of inpatient coding experience at a Level 1 trauma center or academic medical center.
Skills and Knowledge
- Medical terminology.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.
- Understanding of medical record content and management.
- Working knowledge of EHR systems and structured data/database management.
- Strong written communication skills.
- Knowledge of health information laws and patient confidentiality requirements.
- Experience with 3M-360 Computer Assisted Coding preferred.
