The primary purpose of this role is to code physician charges by assigning ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier codes from medical record documentation. The position requires use of multiple resources to support code assignment, as well as the ability to resolve coding denials and pre-bill coding edits.
Level II responsibilities include evaluation and management coding, radiology coding, and emergency department coding.
Key responsibilities include:
- Assign ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier codes from documentation
- Review and resolve pre-bill edits
- Review and resolve coding denials
- Meet or exceed productivity standards
- Maintain a 95.5% or higher accuracy rate in monthly internal audits
- Present coding issues to internal team members, internal clients, and external clients
- Deliver information in one-on-one or small group settings
- Meet deadlines and complete assignments before monthly closing dates
- Apply CCI, LCD, NCD, and other applicable coding rules and client-specific guidelines
- Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications
Education and experience
- Vocational or technical education beyond high school
- 3 to 5 years of coding experience
- CPC, CCS-P, or equivalent certification
- Multi-specialty evaluation and management coding experience
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, human anatomy, and coding rules and regulations
- Knowledge of third-party reimbursement regulations and billing practices
- Ability to examine documents for accuracy and completeness
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to identify and resolve problems
- Knowledge of CCI, LCD, NCD, and other applicable coding rules and regulations
- Ability to communicate clearly and work effectively with coworkers
- Ability to work as part of a team
- Ethical, honest, and professional conduct
- Commitment to continuous learning and development
- Proficiency in Microsoft Word and Excel
