Physician Coding Specialist

Johns Hopkins Intrastaff is the internal staffing agency for the Johns Hopkins Health System and partner hospitals, providing temporary support across Johns Hopkins locations.

This role focuses on assigning diagnosis and procedure codes to professional billing encounters based on medical record documentation and applicable coding guidelines. The position reviews and codes moderately complex cases, including encounters with multiple diagnoses, comorbid conditions, and complex documentation scenarios.

The specialist will use revenue cycle and coding systems to review work queues, identify coding-related claim issues, and resolve routine to moderately complex discrepancies. The role also collaborates with providers and clinical staff to clarify documentation, improve clinical documentation quality, and support accurate coding and billing.

The position includes participation in coding quality assurance activities and requires adherence to federal, state, payer, and organizational coding guidelines while maintaining productivity and quality standards.

Schedule

  • Monday through Friday
  • 8:00am–4:30pm or 8:30am–5:00pm

Pay

  • $26–$30 per hour
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in HIM, Medical Coding, or a related field, or a high school diploma/GED plus 2 years of medical coding experience in lieu of a degree
  • CPC, CCA, or CCS-P certification required
  • Working knowledge of Medicare, Medicaid, and commercial payer policies
  • Knowledge of coding compliance standards and regulatory requirements
  • Demonstrated knowledge of CPT and HCPCS coding systems
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ICD-10
  • Knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology, and professional billing coding guidelines
  • Experience using coding and revenue cycle systems to review work queues, resolve coding edits, and support accurate claim submission
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret coding guidelines and resolve moderately complex coding issues
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with coding staff, providers, and operational teams
