Under general supervision, this position is responsible for billing, coding, posting, assigning correct payer sources, submitting clean claims to insurance, and following up on denied claims in order to maximize revenue cycle performance through billing and coding expertise. The role reviews and analyzes diagnoses and procedures as documented by providers to ensure they are valid and complete, and trains staff on proper billing and coding practices.
Key responsibilities include accurate code assignment, claim generation and submission, denial follow-up, claim review, recommendation support for revenue cycle improvements, compliance adherence, and maintaining current knowledge of coding requirements and best practices.
Qualifications
- High school diploma
- Medical Coding Certificate; CPC or CCS certification required
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- 2 years of experience using ICD coding, CPT, HCPCS, or equivalent experience
Knowledge and Skills
- Knowledge of billing practices, preferably in an FQHC setting
- Knowledge of medical records and EHR systems
- Extensive knowledge of official coding conventions and rules established by the AMA and CMS
- Good math and communication skills
- Ability to perform coding work independently with speed and accuracy
- Ability to identify and verify coding errors through audits
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality
- Ability to work independently and follow verbal and written directions
- Ability to communicate tactfully with staff and the public, including under difficult situations
