The DRG/APC Coordinator analyzes inpatient and outpatient records, assigns codes using ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, ICD-9-CM, CPT, and 3M coding systems, and ensures accurate DRG/APR-DRG assignment. The role supports physicians, the Business Office, and coding leadership by resolving coding questions, reviewing denials, working coding queues, maintaining documentation records, and supporting reimbursement and compliance efforts.
Qualifications
- Associate’s degree in Health Information Technology from an accredited institution approved by the University of South Alabama, or successful completion of a practical nursing program with current Alabama LPN licensure
- 5 years of experience coding inpatient/outpatient Medicare/Champus records in an acute care hospital setting
- AHIMA registration as a Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT)
- Certification as a Certified Coding Specialist (CCS) from AHIMA or Certified Professional Coder – Hospital (CPC-H) from AAPC
Preferred Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Health Information Management or Nursing
- Current Alabama RN licensure
- AHIMA registration as a Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA)
- A bachelor’s degree and RN licensure may substitute for 2 years of required experience
