Under supervision, assigns accurate diagnosis and procedure codes to patient health information records for observation services, hospital ambulatory surgery, complex hospital outpatient visits, emergency departments, and other selected outpatient records.
Uses ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS when applicable, and HCPCS/CPT coding systems in accordance with CMS, NCHS, AMA CPT, NCCI, and Kaiser Permanente coding directives.
Reviews health records, communicates with physicians to clarify diagnoses and procedures, abstracts patient information into computerized systems, and supports accurate and timely coded record availability.
Requirements & Qualifications
- Minimum 1 year of certified coding experience
- High school diploma or GED
- Post-high school coursework in medical records administration, anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
- Certified Coding Specialist, Registered Health Information Technician, Registered Health Information Administrator, or Certified Professional Coder
- Demonstrated competence with personal computers, networks, and Microsoft Office
- Experience with ICD-10, CPT-4, and HCPCS coding systems
- Ability to understand clinical content of a health record
- Preferred: 3 consecutive years of experience as a Certified Hospital Coder
- Preferred: prior coding experience in a hospital setting
- Preferred: completion of an AHIMA Certified Coding Specialist program
