The Patient Account Specialist is responsible for billing third-party payers through a claims processing vendor and appealing denied professional and hospital claims. The role identifies billing issues affecting hospital and physician accounts, takes corrective action to support timely claim filing, and performs follow-up to resolve reimbursement issues and close accounts appropriately.
This position works mostly remotely on a Monday through Friday schedule with 8-hour shifts within operating hours of 6:00 AM to 6:00 PM.
Requirements & Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
- Two years of financial experience or one year of patient accounts experience
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with Epic systems
- Experience managing Medicaid and Managed Medicaid hospital claim denials and follow-up
Key Skills and Duties
- Knowledge of state and federal payer billing rules and guidelines
- Basic understanding of CPT, ICD-9, HCPCS, modifier coding, and place of service requirements
- Billing payers and clients for hospital and professional patient accounts
- Resolving payer rejections and claim edits
- Performing follow-up on assigned accounts
- Identifying denials and underpayments for appeal
- Reviewing and processing denied claims
- Updating records in Epic Resolute
- Processing adjustments and refunds
- Validating payments and adjustments
- Maintaining productivity and accuracy standards
