The Medical Biller is responsible for entering charges, submitting medical claims to insurance companies, managing open accounts receivable for both insurance and patient balances, and responding to patient and insurance inquiries.
Responsibilities include:
- Preparing, reviewing, and transmitting electronic and paper claims
- Following up on unpaid claims within billing policy timeframes
- Posting insurance payments manually or electronically
- Contacting insurance companies regarding payment discrepancies
- Billing secondary and tertiary insurance when needed
- Reviewing accounts in patient follow-up
- Reviewing EOBs, appeals, and denied claims
- Answering patient, insurance, and staff inquiries related to assigned accounts
- Coordinating with front desk or verification teams to confirm active coverage before billing
- Collaborating with coders to clarify diagnosis and procedure code discrepancies
- Reconciling claims against remittance advice to identify underpayments or incorrect adjustments
- Monitoring claim status through clearinghouse platforms and resolving rejections
- Ensuring HIPAA, payer guideline, and internal policy compliance
- Setting up payment plans and assisting with collections when assigned
- Balancing daily receipts and running end-of-day reports
- Managing open item aging reports for patients and insurers
- Supporting internal audits and quality improvement initiatives
Requirements & Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- High school diploma or GED
- One year of full-time clinical or administrative healthcare experience
- Minimum of one year of medical billing experience, preferably in a multi-specialty or oncology setting
- Experience with electronic and paper billing systems
- Experience using Windows and Microsoft Office
Preferred certifications:
- Certified Professional Biller (CPB)
- Certified Billing and Coding Specialist (CBCS)
- Equivalent certification
