The Billing Specialist is responsible for collecting, posting, and managing patient account payments. This role also prepares and submits patient claims to insurance companies and follows up on outstanding claims.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Prepare and submit claims to insurance providers.
- Review and verify patient information and service codes for accuracy.
- Address and resolve billing discrepancies or inquiries from patients and insurance companies.
- Maintain up-to-date knowledge of insurance policies and regulations.
- Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure proper documentation for billing purposes.
Requirements & Qualifications
Required Skills and Abilities
- Ability to operate a computer, computer software, and basic office equipment.
- Knowledge of medical billing and collection practices.
- Understanding of a variety of Explanation of Benefits (EOBs).
- Ability to work effectively in high-pressure situations.
- Basic math, bookkeeping, and accounting skills.
- Ability to work independently and produce prompt, accurate reports.
- Strong time management skills.
- Aptitude to be cross-trained and learn other business office positions.
- Ability to learn required software applications.
Education and Experience
- Previous medical billing experience in a hospital or other health care setting.
- Experience working with medical payers.
