Patient Financial Services Specialist II

SouthEast Alaska Regional Health Consortium (SEARHC)

Performs a variety of patient accounting functions including insurance billing, self-pay billing, remit analysis, cash posting, accounts receivable management, claims follow-up, charge validation and analysis, denial analysis and resolution, and tasks supporting month-end close processes.

Key responsibilities

  • Validate changes and billing information.
  • Ensure proper charge codes, billing, and adjudication of claims in accordance with federal, state, and private billing policies and reimbursement principles.
  • Stay current on payor-specific charging and billing rules.
  • Assist with billing and rebill projects.
  • Identify, analyze, and reconcile billing errors or omissions.
  • Answer patient billing questions and resolve account issues.
  • Manage self-pay accounts in accordance with discount, bad debt, and charity policies.
  • Locate and monitor delinquent self-pay accounts and arrange repayment.
  • Collaborate with financial counselors to identify alternative funding sources.
  • Log transactions, allocate funds appropriately, and reconcile cash activity.
  • Research and resolve unapplied and misapplied cash.
  • Process incoming correspondence, including EOBs, letters, and denials.
  • Track denials and support follow-up with billing teams.
  • Facilitate insurance and patient refunds and maintain refund documentation.
  • Post cash, checks, credit cards, and electronic funds within service-level expectations.
  • Resolve rejected electronic transactions and support electronic payer setup.
  • Document incoming claim denials and support follow-up and appeals.
  • Participate in updating organizational procedures, forms, and manuals.
  • Perform general clerical duties and other assigned tasks.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Associate degree in a related field preferred.
  • Two years of experience in billing, collections, and/or cash posting required.
  • Certification preferred: CRCR (HFMA), CRCS (AAHAM), or CDBS (ADCA).

Knowledge required

  • Hospital or clinic billing and follow-up.
  • Medical terminology.
  • Payor remittances.
  • CPT, HCPCS, and revenue codes.
  • Major insurance company billing policies and claim forms.
  • Reconciliation and balancing of payments against accounts receivable.

Skills and abilities

  • Keyboard and 10-key proficiency.
  • Problem-solving, decision-making, and attention to detail.
  • Verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to collaborate with cross-functional teams.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment.
