Insurance & Patient AR Specialist

The Insurance & Patient AR Specialist is responsible for managing medical accounts receivable collections for a physician medical group. This role follows up on claim denials, resolves billing issues, responds to patient and clinic staff inquiries, and helps keep accounts receivable current.

The position also supports HealthTexas's mission, vision, values, and culture through professionalism, integrity, compassion, synergy, and stewardship.

Key Responsibilities

  • Follow up on insurance billing to ensure prompt payment receipt.
  • Work with patients and insurance companies to resolve unpaid balances.
  • Address patient billing inquiries and initiate adjustment requests when needed.
  • Follow up on zero-payment explanations of benefits to pursue claim payment.
  • Review assigned accounts monthly and correct inconsistencies or errors.
  • Research billing issues and coordinate resolution with relevant parties.
  • Initiate payer or patient refund requests for validated overpayments.
  • Initiate debt write-off requests according to policy and regulatory guidelines.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Work Environment

  • Office-based role using standard office equipment.
  • Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., with additional time as needed to complete projects.
  • Travel to medical offices may be required for benefit education.
Requirements & Qualifications

Required Experience

  • 2+ years of medical billing and/or collections experience in a physician's office or other medical facility setting.
  • Ability to multitask, meet deadlines, and work as a team player.

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Completion of a recognized billing and coding course is preferred.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Knowledge of governmental insurance plans such as Medicare Part B and C, Medicaid, Tricare, and related advantage plans.
  • Knowledge of commercial insurance plans including PPO, HMO, EPO, and HRA.
  • Working knowledge of CPT, HCPCS, and ICD-10.
  • Understanding of HIPAA guidelines.
  • Proficiency with Word, Excel, and Outlook.
  • Experience with EMR software, preferably eClinicalWorks.
