Insurance Specialist - Billing/Follow Up

Overview

Compass Oncology is seeking an Insurance Specialist to join their Central Business Office team in Vancouver, Washington. This role focuses on helping ensure insurance companies reimburse appropriately and that patients' out-of-pocket costs remain as low as possible.

The position supports patient advocacy through insurance follow-up, account balance management, and communication with patients and payers.

Job Scope

Under general supervision, this role is responsible for ensuring payer and patient account balances are paid timely and remain current. The position performs collection activities such as monitoring delinquent accounts, contacting patients for payment, resolving billing problems, and answering routine and non-routine account inquiries.

The role follows standard procedures and pre-established guidelines and supports the US Oncology Compliance Program, including the Code of Ethics and Business Standards and US Oncology's Shared Values.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor delinquent accounts and perform collection duties
  • Review reports, research issues, and resolve discrepancies
  • Review payment postings for accuracy and ensure account balances remain current
  • Work with co-workers to resolve insurance payment and billing errors
  • Update delinquent account status
  • Recommend accounts for collection or write-off
  • Contact patients to secure past-due balances, verify demographics and insurance providers, update system information, and document conversations
  • Answer patient questions related to payment, billing, and insurance, and resolve complaints
  • Refer patients to a Patient Benefits Representative when payment plans are needed
  • Maintain credit balances for patients and payors and ensure timely refunds within government guidelines and regulations
  • Adhere to confidentiality, state, federal, and HIPAA laws and guidelines regarding patient records
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required

Experience

  • Minimum of 2 years of combined medical billing and payment experience required
  • Experience with AR and insurance follow-up preferred
  • Knowledge of insurance companies, EOBs, and medical terminology preferred
  • Comfortable communicating by phone and working with patients and payers
