The Observation Coder is responsible for accurately assigning diagnosis and procedure codes to observation discharges at all McLeod Health facilities.
- Maintain a professional image and provide excellent customer relations to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in accordance with Service Excellence Standards and Core Values.
- Stay current on coding updates by attending coding classes, reading coding publications, and participating in seminars when available.
- Assign ICD-10-CM codes for principal and secondary diagnoses on observation encounters.
- Assign CPT procedure codes for principal and secondary procedures on observation encounters, when applicable, to support the most appropriate APC assignment.
- Apply all required modifiers to CPT procedure codes and ancillary charges to prevent billing edits.
- Query physicians when documentation in the medical record is unclear.
- Maintain department productivity standards with a 95% accuracy rate.
- Respect patient confidentiality at all times.
- Perform backup duties as assigned.
- Work schedule: 80 hours bi-weekly.
Requirements & Qualifications
- 1 to 2 years of hospital observation coding experience in Medical Records.
- High School diploma or GED.
- Current AHIMA or AAPC certification.
- Outpatient coding knowledge and experience.
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding.
- Ability to assign modifiers and ancillary charges accurately.
- Strong attention to detail and documentation review skills.
