Develops outpatient coding education and researches complex outpatient coding denials. Conducts risk-based coding compliance audits and ad hoc audits of outpatient encounters to validate that code assignment complies with official coding guidelines, clinical documentation in the health record, and payer guidelines.
Performs coding research, prepares written audit findings and recommendations, identifies documentation issues that affect coding accuracy, and communicates opportunities for documentation improvement to coders, auditors, managers, and directors. Stays current with AHA Official Coding and Reporting Guidelines, CMS, AAPC, ICD-10-CM, and CPT updates.
Experience
- 5 years of coding experience, including hospital outpatient encounters
- 5 years of coding audit or quality review experience, including outpatient encounters
- 1 year of experience preparing and delivering education related to audit findings or regulatory guidance to coders and auditors
Certifications
- CPC, CPMA, or CEMC required upon hire
- CPC-I preferred upon hire
Education
- Bachelor's degree in a relevant field preferred, or equivalent combination of education and experience
