Certified Coding Specialist I/II/III - OB/GYN

UTHealth Houston is seeking a Certified Coding Specialist for its OB/GYN Revenue Cycle team. This role reviews medical documentation from physicians and other healthcare professionals to assign and sequence CPT/HCPCS, ICD-10-CM, and modifier codes for clinic and hospital-based professional encounters.

The position focuses on inpatient and outpatient E/M encounters, including office visits, hospital outpatient procedures, radiology, and emergency department visits. The coder works in Epic Coding and Optum Claims Manager work queues, resolves coding edits, performs charge entry, and supports charge reconciliation and billing-related abstraction.

This position is remote following in-person training, and employees must reside and work in the State of Texas.

Requirements & Qualifications

Required qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • 2 years of related coding experience
  • Knowledge of ICD-10-CM and CPT coding conventions
  • Ability to review medical records and accurately assign and sequence CPT, ICD-10-CM, HCPCS codes, and modifiers
  • Strong analytical skills and the ability to interpret data and maintain spreadsheets
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and the ability to abstract data and maintain a database
  • Understanding of federal and government regulations, coding guidance, and revenue cycle policies and procedures
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills
  • Strong time management skills
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision

Certification requirement

One of the following must be obtained within 6 months of hire:

  • RHIT
  • CCS
  • CCS-P
  • CPC
  • RCC
