Medical Coder

Luminis Health

The inpatient medical coder codes hospital inpatient accounts to support appropriate reimbursement, research, statistics, and compliance with federal and state regulations.

Key responsibilities

  • Assign ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS codes for inpatient cases.
  • Ensure accurate MS-DRG, MCC/CC, APR-DRG, SOI/ROM, and POA assignments.
  • Review documentation and send coding queries to providers when needed.
  • Monitor daily work queues and complete coding and abstracting within required timeframes.
  • Communicate billing and registration issues with hospital departments and management.
  • Maintain compliance with AHIMA ethical coding standards and HIPAA privacy regulations.
  • Use coding references, software tools, and EHR systems to support accurate code assignment.
  • Participate in ongoing education, training, certification, and DRG mismatch meetings.
Requirements & Qualifications

Required education

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Formal ICD-10-CM and CPT training required.
  • Associate or bachelor's degree preferred.

Required experience

  • At least 2 years of inpatient ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding and abstracting experience in an acute care hospital setting.
  • Experience with MS-DRG/APR-DRG methodologies and inpatient reimbursement guidelines preferred.

Required certifications

  • CCS certification required.
  • RHIT or RHIA preferred.

  • Strong analytical and organizational skills.
  • Ability to prioritize workloads and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work well under pressure with minimal supervision.
  • Strong problem-solving, customer service, and communication skills.
  • Basic medical terminology knowledge and computer/typing proficiency.
