Medical Records Technician (Coder) Auditor

The Medical Records Technician (Coder) Auditor position is located at the Erie East VA Clinic. MRTs (Coders) classify medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-based settings, including physician offices, group practices, multi-specialty clinics, and specialty centers. These coding practitioners analyze and abstract health records and assign alpha-numeric codes for diagnoses and procedures.

Major responsibilities include reviewing coded data for accuracy, applying current coding systems such as ICD, CPT, and HCPCS, auditing inpatient and outpatient records, identifying documentation issues, reporting audit results, and providing coding guidance to staff to improve consistency, compliance, and overall data quality.

Requirements & Qualifications

Applicants may be referred before completion of educational or certification requirements, but cannot be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic requirements

  • U.S. citizenship required.
  • One year of creditable experience with medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health record structure and format, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Qualifying education includes an associate's degree in health information technology/health information management or a related degree with at least 12 semester hours in the field.
  • Completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program or equivalent intensive coding training program may qualify.
  • Must meet certification requirements through AHIMA, AAPC, or ACDIS.
  • English language proficiency required.

GS-9 grade requirements

  • One year of experience equivalent to the GS-8 journey level.
  • Mastery level certification required.
  • Must demonstrate advanced knowledge of ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
  • Must be able to research complex coding questions, review documentation for compliance, present audit results, identify trends, and work effectively with individuals at all organizational levels.
