The Associate Coding Specialist is responsible for correctly assigning ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM diagnostic and procedure codes for clinical outpatient and/or inpatient encounters in accordance with regulatory requirements and CMS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting.
This role supports the Health Information Management department by coding a range of encounters, including laboratory, radiology, outpatient and hospital clinical visits, bariatric visits, emergency department, same day surgery, observation records, and other coding assignments as directed by leadership. The position also supports accurate revenue reimbursement through coding accuracy and abstracting pertinent data elements from clinical documentation.
The role may also involve assigning appropriate charges based on documentation and coding guidelines and working with leadership to obtain physician clarification when documentation is incomplete, vague, or ambiguous.
This position does not provide patient care.
Knowledge and skills
- Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, disease pathology, and medical terminology
- Knowledge of coding conventions and CMS Official Guidelines for Coding and Reporting
- Ability to accurately translate diagnostic descriptions into ICD-9-CM and ICD-10-CM codes
- Ability to navigate the electronic medical record to identify appropriate documentation for coding and billing support
- Knowledge of clinical content standards
Education and experience
- Associate’s degree in Health Information Management preferred
- Minimum of 1 year of outpatient coding or inpatient coding experience required
- Experience in an acute care facility and/or Trauma Level II coding preferred
Certifications
- CCA, CPC, CCS, or RHIT required
Other qualifications
- Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking
- Must possess, or be able to obtain within 90 days, the computer skills needed for online learning, forms, policies, and benefits enrollment
