Under the supervision of the Manager of Coding and Data Quality, this position assists with oversight of daily inpatient coding operations, including work volume distribution, workflow evaluations, testing, report reconciliation, coding training, and research on coding issues.
The role also performs both inpatient and outpatient coding responsibilities, including reviewing medical records, assigning accurate diagnosis and procedure codes, supporting compliance, participating in audits, generating reports, and collaborating with providers and billing teams to support accurate reimbursement.
Required Education
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Medical coding education
- Preferred bachelor's degree in health information management, business administration, or a related field
Required Experience
- 3 years of verifiable, progressive coding experience
- Preferred 5+ years of coding experience in an acute care hospital setting
Required Certifications
- One of the following required: CPC, COC, CIC, CCS, CCS-P, or CCA
- Preferred: RHIT or RHIA
Key Knowledge and Skills
- Inpatient and outpatient coding expertise
- ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT coding knowledge
- Understanding of HIPAA and coding compliance requirements
- Ability to review clinical documentation and assign accurate codes
- Ability to conduct audits, quality reviews, and provide coding guidance
- Strong communication and collaboration skills
