Under the supervision of a Coding Supervisor, the Health Information Management (HIM) Coder abstracts relevant clinical and demographic information from the medical record to identify care rendered to the patient for reimbursement, research, and compliance.
The role ensures the medical record reflects accurate attending physician documentation for coding physician and facility encounters. It assigns ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, and HCPCS Level II codes in accordance with coding and reimbursement guidelines, abstracts inpatient cases into DRGs, and applies APCs to outpatient accounts.
The position maintains productivity standards, achieves quality accuracy of 95% or above, and works in a healthcare environment at John H. Stroger, Jr. Hospital.
Minimum qualifications
- High School Diploma or G.E.D.
- One year of coding experience within the last two years
- One or more of the following certifications:
- RHIA
- RHIT
- CCS
- CCS-P
- CPC
- Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends, holidays, and various shifts
Preferred qualifications
- RHIA or RHIT certification preferred
Knowledge, skills, and abilities
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office Excel and Word
- Working knowledge of ICD-9-CM, ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT-4, and HCPCS Level II codes
- Ability to code using a computerized encoder/abstracting system
- Ability to operate a PC in a Windows environment
- Strong verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
