The HB Coding Analyst and Educator plays a critical role in ensuring compliant, accurate coding practices while fostering continuous education and collaboration between physicians, providers, clinical staff, hospital departments, and coding staff. This role requires expertise in hospital-based physician services coding, analytical skills to assess coding accuracy, and the ability to develop and deliver educational programs.
The analyst is responsible for reviewing coded hospital accounts, identifying improvement opportunities, and ensuring alignment between clinical documentation, coding, and provider practices. The role also supports workflow improvements, including input related to EPIC templates, and collaborates with IT and revenue cycle management teams to optimize coding and documentation systems.
Key responsibilities include reviewing inpatient and outpatient hospital billing accounts, auditing medical records, analyzing coding trends, designing training materials, delivering education sessions, monitoring regulatory updates, and supporting implementation of coding changes across the organization.
Skills and competencies
- Strong knowledge of medical terminology, disease classification, and healthcare coding systems, including ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, DRG, CPT, and HCPCS
- Proficiency with healthcare coding software, including CAC and EPIC
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
- Knowledge of CMS regulations and industry standards
- Strong presentation and facilitation skills
Experience
- Minimum 3 years of coding experience in a hospital setting
- Experience in coding analysis or auditing preferred
- Demonstrated experience developing and delivering educational programs for healthcare professionals
- Knowledge of 3M and EPIC systems
- Experience conducting audits and implementing quality assurance initiatives
Education and certifications
- Associate degree in Health Information Management, medical coding, or a related field required; bachelor's or master's degree preferred
- RHIA, RHIT, COC, CCS, or equivalent certification required
- Additional AHIMA or AAPC certifications, including CIC, are a plus
- EPIC certification such as Resolute HB Charging, including CDM, is a plus
