A Day in the Life
- Analyze each medical record to determine which items will be coded and abstracted.
- Accurately code and abstract inpatient medical records per work assignment, meeting expected productivity standards.
- Assign ICD-10-CM diagnosis codes, ICD-10-PCS procedure codes, and CPT-4 procedure codes according to national and departmental guidelines and AHIMA Code of Ethics.
- Abstract and/or edit medical record data as required by departmental guidelines.
- Assign and enter charges for ER EM levels, infusions, injections, and procedures per departmental guidelines.
- Communicate with physicians and Clinical Documentation Integrity Specialists to request clarification and/or additional record information to ensure correct code assignment, appropriate reimbursement, and compliance with established guidelines.
- Maintain organized personal coding reference materials and participate in educational activities to keep coding skills current.
- Support prebill processes and timely collaboration with CDI to ensure coding accuracy and optimal billing outcomes.
Additional Information
- Eligible for a sign-on bonus of $5,000.
- Employees must be vaccinated or have lab-confirmed immunity for Measles, Mumps, Rubella, and Varicella.
- A flu vaccine is required during the season hired and annually thereafter, unless an approved medical or religious exemption applies.
Required Qualifications
- Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Health Information, or CCS certification with a minimum of 2 years coding experience.
- RHIT, RHIA, or CCS certification required.
- 1 to 3 years of previous experience using ICD-10-CM and ICD-10-PCS coding systems.
- Demonstrated ability to meet productivity and quality standards.
- Minimum of 2 years of inpatient coding experience, including complex diagnoses and procedures.
- Experience with prebill processes and timely communication/collaboration with CDI.
Skills and Competencies
- Strong inpatient coding and abstracting skills.
- Knowledge of ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, and CPT-4 coding.
- Ability to ensure coding accuracy, reimbursement integrity, and compliance.
